A: Flanges link pipes, valves, and other elements in piping networks. They ensure a leak-proof bond and are essential for many applications. A flange connection involves two pieces affixed to pipe ends, bolted or welded together. This firm fastening also allows for straightforward disassembly if bolted together.

A: Flanges are chosen based on their corrosion resistance properties, erosion resistance properties, pressure temperature rating (Class), number of welds required for attachment, physical size (some flange designs may not fit into the space allowed) and cost.

A: Excessive Piping System Loads at Flange Locations. Excessive forces and bending moments can loosen the bolting or distort the flanges and lead to leaks. Common causes are inadequate piping flexibility, using cold spring to align flanges, and improper location of supports or restraints.

A: A flange's pressure class is assigned based on the flange's maximum pressure rating, maximum temperature rating, and the material of manufacture. The maximum pressure and maximum temperature ratings are collectively referred to as the 'pressure-temperature ratings'. Pressure classes are not material specific.

A: Hydrostatic Testing: This involves filling the piping system with water, which is then pressurized to a specified test pressure that is higher than the system's normal operating pressure. Observations are made for any water leakage around the flange.
